Etsyhookers Triathlon

We're well underway, anyone participating has until the end of August to finish the three legs.
The first leg: Crochet an item using fibre you haven't used before. For example, if you usually use yarn, try thread. If you've never used wire before, try wire...recycled t-shirts, bags, video tape...anything you can use a hook with!

The second leg: Try something new! Never crocheted a doily? A shawl? Baby sweater? Now is the time to challenge yourself and try.

The third and final leg: Using a granny square pattern, either a pattern you like or one you've designed, create something *other than* an afghan. There are many uses for granny squares, see what you can come up with! (Keep in mind, granny squares are any square that is worked in the round, not just your traditional 3dc, ch1 type!)

Our First Crochet Triathlon

*All crocheters are more than welcome to join the fun and challenge their creativity, unfortunately, they will not be eligible for prizes. Non-members may share their progress, how-to's will be posted at the end of each event's blog post.

Welcome to the Hookers Triathlon, 2011.
The triathlon consists of 3 different events, each announced separately at intervals of approximately 2-3 weeks, and each will have a time limit, to make this more of a challenge.
Unlike our usual challenges, the triathlon events will not have specific themes, but will be more of a challenge to your creativity.
If you wish to take part, follow the thread here where each event will be announced. I will also post this information on our Facebook page and our blog.

The first event will be posted in mid-June. The second will be posted 2-3weeks later, and the third, 2-3 weeks after the second. You do not have to finish each event within the 2-3 weeks, as long as you finish all 3 before the overall deadline of August 31/2011, you will have successfully completed!

Congrats again to SturmDM for winning our last challenge. As winner, SturmDM chose to honour Earth Day with the theme of this challenge. Entries were to reflect what Earth Day meant to you--whether you chose to use materials that would otherwise be discarded, create something to replace a disposable item, something depicting nature or even something to show how one could replace less earth-friendly practices with more environmentally friendly ones (like running shoe slippers to represent walking as opposed to driving).
A few of our members rose to the challenge, their entries are posted for sale in their shops: just click on an item to see the listing.
We'll kick off our voting week on Earth Day, just choose your favourite item and vote, voting is open to everyone and is completely anonymous. The polls will be open until noon on Friday April 29th, the winner will be announced soon after.

Our newest challenge is up and running! The theme, chosen by the winner of our last challenge, is in honour of Earth Day, April 22nd. To enter, you must be a member of Etsyhookers team, requirements can be found here.
This looks to be a fun challenge, whether you choose to create an item of something in nature (like a tree or a flower) or something symbolic of being eco-friendly (sneakers to show walking instead of driving), or even something using materials that otherwise would go to the landfill!

Entries will, as usual, be posted here, with voting to commence--when else?--April 22nd, Earth Day! So, stay tuned to see what some of our team members can come up with!

New Challenge, and Changes

First, apologies for not posting this in January like I'd planned!
Our new challenge is up and running! All team members, 'old and new' are welcome to join! Team members can see the rules as well as post their items in this thread. This round's theme is 'Singin in the Rain', so think of anything inspired by rain: : things such as boots, rain hats/coats, umbrellas, rainbows, etc.

Our team on Etsy is growing almost daily, welcome to all our new members!

With Etsy having changed their forums drastically, there is no longer a promotions forum to announce sales, new items, etc. We do have our Facebook business page, new items and specials from our team members are posted there, so feel free to check us out!

Etsyhookers Team Challenge #10

It has been a while since our last challenge, but what with having to find a new home, and the subsequent move to that new home, the challenge was delayed.
For those who have forgotten, Michele ( tangledknots.etsy.com ) was the winner of Challenge #9 and had chosen what looks to be a fun theme!
The theme: Keeping Fit. Crocheted items that you can use/wear while doing your favourite physical activity, things like lightweight walker's backpacks, water bottle holders, ipod cozies, etc.

Our first challenge in our new home has gotten off to a slow start, but some of our team members have risen to the challenge and come up with their creations for this event. Deadline for members to enter is Friday, September 17th, please see details in the discussion on our private FB page if you are a member interested in entering.

The voting poll will open by 12 pm (noon) EST on Monday, September 20, and will close on Monday September 27th at 12 pm (noon) EST.

It's here at last! Our 'open' time for new members!
Through the month of September, Etsyhookers is open to new members.
Requirements:
1. You must have an Etsy shop
2. You must be 18 or older.
3. Your shop must be at least 50% crochet (crochet-related) items, with a minimum of 7 crochet (crochet-related) items.
4. After approval, please be sure to tag your items with 'Etsyhookers team'--this tag applies ONLY to crochet/crochet related items. Please do not tag other crafts that contain no crochet with our team tag. We are trying to promote crochet, not painting, ceramics, sewing, etc.

*Please note, crochet related does not mean generic craft supplies that *could possibly* be used in crochet, but very rarely would be, like foam shapes, wood cut-outs, etc.
Examples of what is crochet-related: patterns, yarns, buttons, hooks...

To join, this is now a 2-3-step process since we've moved to Facebook!
First, apply to join our private group page. This is mandatory for members, since this is the only way I can contact everyone in the group with important special notices, announcements, etc.
Second, you *must* send me a message after you've applied to join through my Etsy shop, letting me know the name you applied to join under; your shop name will of course show in the conversation. Otherwise, I'll have no idea who you are and will be unable to
approve you.
Third, you are more than welcome to 'like' our FB business page. Once I've approved you for our private page, if I notice you've 'liked' our business page, I will make you an admin so you will be able to post pictures and links! If you do join our business page, please read FAQ's about photos before posting your listing pics.

Now is a great time to join! We've just started a new team challenge, and the deadline to enter is September 17th--rules are posted in our private group on FB.

With summer in full spring, it's a good time for ice cream. After spotting a nice strawberry ice cream shade of pink in my cotton yarn, I whipped up a neapolitan 'flavoured' dish/wash cloth, and this inspired a neapolitan ice cream collection with goodies from various members:

Moving, even online, isn't easy

After Ning's recent decision to do away with their free service, many groups are now looking for new homes, and Etsyhookers Team is one of them. Now, it would have been fine if their fee was reasonable. For $2.95, you could get a basic plan...but then, you have a cap of 150 members. Our team currently has over 200. The next step up, which would be pretty much what we have now, would be $19.95. A month. So, from nothing to twenty bucks. Talk about your price hikes.

So, we are currently checking out other 'homes' for our group to migrate to. Until we decide where we will settle down, memberships will be closed to new members, so if you are interested in joining our team, please be sure to check back here, where info on our permanent home and our next open date will be posted.

As winner of our last challenge, lilycobweb chose the theme for our new challenge. Since it is March, with St. Patrick's Day located right in the middle, and lilycobweb is Irish, she chose an Irish theme.
This theme includes not only St. Patrick's Day, but colour, stitch technique, or anything Ireland is known for.

The deadline for Etsyhookers team members to enter is Tuesday, March 30th at 12:00 am (midnight) EST, with voting poll to open by 12 pm (noon) EST on Wednesday, March 31. Voting will close on Thursday, April 8th at 12 pm (noon) EST.The entries are coming in, and it looks like it will be another 'challenge' when it comes to picking your favourite to vote for!

March is...time for our new Etsyhookers Challenge!
Lilycobweb, as the winner of our last challenge, chose the theme for this one. Because St. Patrick's Day is in March, and Lilycobweb is Irish, she chose to have an Irish theme this round. We are getting a bit of a late start to have new listings specifically for St. Patrick's Day, but just close your eyes, and what comes to mind when you think...Ireland? I don't know if I'm just strange, but one of the first things that came to my mind was banshees!

If that doesn't work, I did post a couple of links to info about Ireland in our Team Challenge Rules.

Already, we have a few entries, once a few more start coming in, I'll be posting pics of the entries. Not a fellow hooker? You can still join in the fun! Once the deadline passes for the members to enter (March 30), we will post a poll for everyone to vote. You do not need to be a member, do not even need to have a blog on Blogger, and no need to sign up for anything, just check out the entries, click your favourite, and you're done!

Here it is - a new EtsyHookers Team Creative Challenge!

The theme of this Challenge is Reuse, Recycle, Repurpose. Members were asked to create items that are environmentally friendly. Items could be crocheted from eco friendly yarn, repurposed yarn (yarn made from plastic bags, fabric strips, or old garments, etc.) and also can include recycled items (such as CD's, plastic rings from can tops, etc.).

Crochetgal (aka Valerie) has some stunning shawls. When she photographs them like the one above, it makes me think of getting ready to take flight.

Twas the night before Christmas and all around me
There was unfinished crocheting not under the tree,
The stockings weren’t hung by the chimney with care
‘Cause the heels and the toes had not a stitch there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
But I had not finished the caps for their heads.
Dad was asleep—he was no help at all.
And the sweater for him was 6″ too small.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I put down my hook to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash.
Tripped over my yarn and fell down in my stash.

The tangle of yarn that lay deep as the snow
Reminded me how far I still had to go.
When out on the lawn I heard such a noise,
I was sure it would wake up both Dad and the boys.

And although I was tired–my brain a bit thick,
I knew in a moment that it must be St Nick.
Yet what I heard left me very perplex-ed
For nothing I heard was what I expect-ed.

“Move Rowan! Move Patons! Move Koigu and Clover!
Move Shelridge! Move Starmore! Move Spinrite! Move over!
Lopi, don’t circle around, just stand there in line.
Pay attention you sheep and you’ll work out just fine!

I know this is hard as it’s just your first year
But I’d hate to go back to 8 tiny reindeer.”
I peered over the sill. What I saw was amazing:
Eight wooly sheep on my lawn all a-grazing!

And then in a twinkle, I heard at the door
Santa’s big boots stomping on the porch floor.
I rose from my knees and got back on my feet.
As I turned around, St Nick I did meet.

He was dressed all in wool from his heat to his toe
And his clothes were hand crochet from above to below.
A bright Fair Isle sweater he wore on his back.
And his toys were all stuffed in an Aran crochet sack.

His hat was a wonder of bobbles and lace
A beautiful frame for his rosy red face.
The scarf on his neck could have stretched for a mile,
And the socks peeking over his boots were Argyle.

On the back of his mitts was an intricate cable.
And suddenly on one I spotted a small label:
“S.C.” in duplicate on the cuff.
So I asked, “Hey, Nick, did YOU crochet all this stuff?”

He proudly replied, “Ho, ho, ho, yes I did.
I learned how to crochet when I was just a kid.”
He was chubby and plump, a well dressed old man,
And I laughed to myself, for I’d thought up a plan.

I flashed him a grin and jumped up in the air,
And the next thing he knew, he was tied to a chair.
He spoke not a word, but looked down in his lap
Where I had laid my crochet hook and yarn for a cap.

He began then to crochet, first one cap then 2–
For the first time I thought I might really get through.
He put heels in the stockings and toes in some socks,
While I sat back drinking a scotch on the rocks.

Quickly like magic his hooks they flew,
Good Grief! He was finished by two!
He sprang for his sleigh when I let him go free,
And over his shoulder he looked back at me.
I heard him explain as he sailed past the moon,
“Next year, start your crocheting sometime around JUNE!”

My friend, CharteChic is one talented lady! I met her quite by accident as I was browsing the "Photos" feature on the Etsyhookers site. I was simply over-taken by her amazing sense of style, design, and yarn/color combinations. Her designs are feminine, elegant and breath-takingly beautiful!
Charte describes herself as a "self-proclaimed fiber freak" whose one-of-a-kind (OOAK) designs are both "sassy and functional". And you know what? She's right! Gotta love it! :) My favorite of her tags is "Wearable Art" and that's exactly what her designs bring to mind... a work of art!
Purchasing most of her "raw" materials from fellow etsians, Charte creates luscious neck warmers, scarves, shrugs, and cowls, to just name a few. I had a difficult time selecting my favorites to share with you so let me encourage you to visit her shop and be WOWed!

The EtsyHookers Crochet Team is officially 1 year old today, December 1st! Created by Deon, I took over the team in March of this year. Lots of changes have happened on our team since then and I’m happy to say that most of the original members who signed up last December are still with us and active!

Nominated by NoraDora, our new EtsyHooker of the Week seems to find herself on the front page of Etsy on occasion. We can all see why when we check out her shop. Fray's shop is filled with goodies to warm you up in a fashionable way.

Her shop has some of the most beautiful and unique scarves that are available on Etsy. One of my favorites is the Blooming Vine Scarf which comes in a multitude of colors. I don't know if her scarves are made from a pattern or if she just picks up the hook and yarn and creates them on a whim. We are lucky to have such a talented person as a member of our team. You can see she is a dedicated team player as her shop name comes up in many forum posts and promotions.

Book Review --- Hooked on Murder

With winter coming for us here in the Northern Hemisphere, is a great time to start thinking about how to spent those long dark nights. While most of us will be busy crocheting our fingers off, we might like to take a break and do some reading- with a crochet twist of course.

In Hooked on Murder: A Crochet Mystery by Betty Hechtman, Molly Pink stumbles upon (literally) the body of her neighbor Ellen Sheridan. When the police arrive and find Molly hovering over the deceased, things get complicated. Things get even more complicated when her past relationship with Ellen is revealed. Ellen was once the business partner of Molly's husband. When he died, Ellen pushed Molly out of the business. Although Molly has since gone on with her life, the police don't believe there are no hard feelings. Not to mention Detective Heather has it out for Molly.

Ellen was the leader of the crochet group that meets at the book store where Molly works. To clear her name Molly takes up the hobby and joins the group in an attempt to find the real killer and clear her own name.

I enjoyed this light mystery. It's not going to be the cure for senility, that's for sure, but it was entertaining. Molly is an engaging character, although her inability to grasp the simplest stitches of crochet was baffling. Am I right in thinking Granny squares aren't that hard to master? The ladies of the crochet group were quite funny. I especially liked Adele. Her reaction to two ladies who dared to pull out knitting in a crochet group was priceless:

"We may be the new kids on the block, since crochet isn't nearly as old as knitting, but we will not be treated like the poor stepsister anymore." Adele raised her fist in a sign of crochet power, and you could practically hear some kind of anthem start in the background.

That rivalry is highlighted throughout the book. There were also some little tidbits about the history of crochet that I found interesting. And can you really have your pet's hair woven into yarn? I have enough around here to make a couple of doggie sweaters!

Although there was quite a bit about this book that I liked, I had high hopes for Detective Heather and was disappointed. The author makes her a two dimensional character out to steal the protagonist's man and put her in jail. And unless she has a dog named Scooby-Doo, I don't know how she could have been in charge of a homocide and miss such huge clues. That's my biggest gripe with the book.

If you want a quick entertaining read, I recommend this book.

Our hard working team leader is a great example to the team. She works very hard for the team, keeping up with lots of administrative type things that most of us never even know about. She has a shop that is an excellent example of great photography, beautiful items, and variety without seeming scattered. She also has a few items in her shop that her fellow crocheters might like to own, like her lovely stitch markers and patterns. She was nominated for this honor by NoraDora.

If you look through RedBerryCrochet's shop, you will discover a few bits of information about her by the items she sells. For example, she sells book covers. That gives us the hint that she must like books. In fact, one of her other jobs is working in a library.

Another section of RedBerry's shop lets you know that she must love her pets. She has pet blankets as well as cat toys. Her cat toys even have her cat as an adorable model.

Crochet Folk Art Patterns

Two sections of RedBerry's shop are dedicated to those of us who also love to crochet, as she does. Just in time for some cute fall photos and field trips with baby, Lynn's Lovelies has this set of hat and booties in a pumpkin patch theme. At least half the time I have been to a pumpkin patch I have been surprised at how chilly it was, so these would be perfect to help keep baby warm on the trip.

Crochet Bouquet is a shop full of flowers. Whenever I see an item from this shop, I think of my wedding because I made the flowers for my husband to wear on his lapel. I think those are the last thread flowers I made, so I really admire the ability of those who can make small items like these. This scarf is another that would be a hit in my family. It looks fuzzy and warm.

Even though I have made soap savers before, I never would have thought of suggesting it be hung outside for hand washing after gardening. What a great idea!

Wouldn't this backpack be perfect for a little girl for school or perhaps ballet lessons? Bubblegirlknits has plenty of crocheted items in her shop, despite her shop name. She has chosen a lovely color palette for her items that gives her shop an overall cohesive appearance.

Available in various sizes and colors in her shop, Bubblegirl has some adorable hats like this one. I can see my three year old with one like this on her head, especially in purple.

For the new baby, Bubblegirl has a few lovely blankets with delicate edging with ribbon woven around. This yellow one really catches my eye.

I met Jennifer a while back on another crochet board and was just stunned by her designing talent. I remember how open and sharing she was with information and advise and it's because of her that I joined etsy. I wasn't at all surprised when she announced that she was going to be published because for anyone who's visited her shop, you can't help falling in love with the clean lines and unique color combinations that seem to jump off the page.

Of the 21 items listed, 11 are patterns which are sure to provide you with a unique custom item for those of you who choose to make it yourself. One of my favorite patterns is the "Girl's Triangle Summer Halter and Hat". Just darling!

This roll-brimmed hat is another example of Jennifer's designing skills and creativity:

This black beaded shawl is sooooo pretty and would add just the right amount of flair to that little whatever color dress you need to spice up!

North Autumn Crafts' Version of the Pattern of the Month

Mountainside Crochet has some really cute and original amigurumi and stuffed creations in her shop. The above bikini beach girl comes with her own matching towel.

Just in time for school, you can find a cute pencil shaped rug for your child's schoolwork space or room. Mountainside also has another rug in the shape of a spaceship currently available in her shop.

One of my favorites from Mountainside's shop is the Doo-Dad, probably because it is so colorful and it reminds me of a character in The Phantom Tollbooth. This would make a great gift for a small child because it would be much easier to catch and grab than a round ball.

These simple and cute lip balm holders (with lip balm included) from Karmacrochet are just the thing to help you keep track of your lip balm in your purse. With their bright colors, they would be cute for girls to attach to their backpacks for back to school.

With fall just around the corner in this hemisphere, you can find some lovely orange items in the kitchen and bath section of Karmacrochet's shop. The dishcloths above are vibrant and useful.

Pattern of the Month --- CROCHET "SCRUNCII" PONYTAIL HOLDER

Here's an original pattern that I would like to share with everyone. It's very simple and very quick. I designed this pattern when i first started crocheting many years ago.

CROCHET "SCRUNCII" PONYTAIL HOLDER
By: Kim Luxich "The Colorful Bee"

Materials:
Size I hook
cotton thread or yarn
elastic ponytail holder
(pony beads) *optional*

**please note** pony beads must be strung onto yarn before starting project if you wish to add them on last round**
Directions:
Rnd 1: join yarn around band with a SL . do 26 SC around the band. join with a SL to first SC. Do Not Turn

Rnd 2: (CH 5, skip next SC, SC in next SC) around to end. join with SL in same ST as beg CH 5.

Rnd 3: SC in next 5 SP, CH 3 (DC, CH 2, 2DC) in same CH 5 SP. *(2DC, CH2, 2DC) in next CH 5 SP. Repeat from * around to end. join with a SL in top of beg CH 3. Fasten off.

**Note to Rnd 3** Pony beads can be added as an option on this round. Simply work as described above sliding 1 pony bead into each CH 2 space!

Creative Challenge No. 2 Rainbow Theme Winner

For this Rainbow themed Challenge, members were asked to create an item using at least 5 of the 7 colors of the traditional rainbow; red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. They were also asked to describe how color influences their designs.

This winning design by DebzCreations is not only a colorful and creative entry, but it has a special theme, close to her heart, that ties in beautifully with this Challenge. “This bag was created as a tribute to my incredible 14 year old autistic daughter . . . Autism is a puzzle. Currently 1 in every 150 babies born have some form of Autism. The rainbow of colors represents the wide diversity of the Autism Spectrum.”
